RECAP: Practice 1 kicked off with beautiful conditions at a sunny Phillip Island. Early in the session, Fabian Coulthard reported that his No. 12 Shell V-Power Mustang had ‘push’ at high speeds. Scott McLaughlin set the fastest time early in the session and then proceeded to complete race runs. After some quick adjustments, Coulthard sets the sixth quickest time to that point, however continued to work on balance. Session one ended with McLaughlin in fourth and Coulthard 13th.
Practice 2 was an important session, as earning a place in the Top 10 would ensure immediate graduation to the Q2 qualifying session tomorrow. Each driver worked across the session up to a fast lap, which came with ‘sticker’ tyres at the very end of the session. The two drivers took to the track with five minutes remaining, running nose-to-tail slicing through the traffic to set the top two times of the session. This has given them to right to skip tomorrow’s Q1 session.
Supercars return to circuit tomorrow morning for Practice 3 at 10:40am local time.
COULTHARD QUOTE: “It’s good that we’ve got two fast cars, that’s the main thing. It’s hard to know where you’re really at when the Triple Eight Holdens aren’t there. We’ll keep working on it and look to improve it overnight. This is one of those tracks where if you find a little bit, you find a lot. I’m not 100% happy, and we can make it better. The wind was blowing a bit in that session, and the weather can really transform the way the car handles here so you’ve got to keep an eye on that.”
MCLAUGHLIN QUOTE: “I’m really happy. We’ve had a solid day. We just did race runs in the first session, before doing quali runs at the end. It was overall pretty good, we’ve got a little bit to work on overnight but I think we have a really good package for tomorrow morning. I really enjoy being able to flow the car and carry speed though corners, and this is one of the only tracks where we can slide it through corners a bit and not lose time. When the weather is like it is today, it’s one of the best places to be in the world.”
